The Hosts of NorthSound Racing

Steve Mortland

Steve's announcing career began in the early 90's, when he got involved in a local professional wrestling promotion call "Ringside Professional Wrestling". The promotion wanted to do a local cable TV show, and Steve was called upon to be the play by play guy, changing his name to "Skip Maxwell". He learned a lot about being comfortable with a microphone, and also learning how to edit and produce the show.

In 1997. he met a gentleman named Scott Ellsworth, who at that time was an advertising representative for KRKO AM1380 Radio out of Everett, Washington. Scott also did the play by play for KRKO's broadcasts of the racing at Evergreen Speedway on Saturday nights. The company that Steve worked for at the time bought an advertising package for the race broadcasts, and in 1998, was approached to advertise again. When Steve and Scott met to arrange the advertising package, Steve asked Scott what he had planned for the '98 season, and Scott mention that he would like to add a pit reporter to the show. Steve asked if the position had been filled, and he and Scott decided to give it a try. His contribution to the shows was to do interviews during the course of the night, and did this for the entire season.

Steve worked off and on for both KRKO and Evergreen Speedway for the next 5 years, doing both radio and public adress race calling. He has also announced at Yakima Speedway, Tri-Cities Raceway, South Sound Speedway, the Wenatchee Valley Super Oval, and at various banquets, soap box and pine wood derbies.

Northsound Racing started in the fall of 2004. KRKO had become an affiliate of the Motor Racing Network, the Performance Racing Network, and the Indy Racing League Radio Network. Steve was working at KRKO part time as a board operator for the Everett Silvertips radio broadcasts, and the then program director, Tony Stevens, tossed out the idea to devise a radio show revolving around the local racing scene, to compliment KRKO's upcoming NASCAR broadcasts. The idea of doing a show was something that had appealed to him for a long time. Steve enlisted the assistance of Carla Heath and Gaylon Stewart, and the show debuted in February of 2006.

Steve continues to be involved with Northsound Racing, acting as both host and producer. Northsound Racing has evolved over the past 4 years to become a well respected avenue to both race teams and race facilities. The show has given all involved experiences and friendships that will last a lifetime.
